What is Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology?

Nakshatra means star constellation. According to the Indian vedic astrology, there is a total of 28 nakshatras. How ever the 28th Nakshatra, Abhijeet is not considered for calculations. Therefore, as per the hindu vedic astrology, your janma nakshatra will be one of the 27 nakshatras recognised by the vedic astrology chart.

How is Janma Nakshatra Calculated?

According to indian astrology or the hindu vedic astrology chart, the zodiac comprises of 27 nakshatras covering an entire circle of 360° (remember, the western zodiac has only 12 signs covering the same 360°). Each Janma Nakshatra or the nakshatra at the time of birth is determined by finding the position of Moon in a given nakshatra at the time of birth. This means that a person's nakshatra is the prominant star (ie, one of the 27 nakshatras) through which the moon passes during its monthly cycle. To make it simple, consider a line is drawn from the place of your birth, through the moon, at the exact time of your birth . Your nakshatra is that group of stars towards which this particular line points.
