For a long and a happy married life, the sages of ancient times studied the stars and the planets, and on their study based a methodology which is used today by the Hindus when considering a marriage alliance.
A marriage is a solemn agreement between a boy and a girl to live together for the rest of their lives. There is no turning back on marriage. For this reason, all efforts are made to ensure that the marriage will be a happy and a compatible one.
Twenty poruthams or kootas were charted by the sages but today only ten suffice to come to a decision whether the boy and the girl who wish to marry should go ahead with it or not. The ten poruthams or kootas which are charted out are: dinam, ganam, yoni, rasi, rasiyathipaty, rajju, vedha, vasya, mahendram and stree deergham. The elders and the parents of both the girl’s and the boy’s family come together to study and match the poruthams.
Rasi Porutham is well known to represent compatibility of the birth stars or the zodiac signs of the couple. Prosperous life is said to belong to those whose Rasi porutham is found compatible. The position of the moon at the time of birth is the determinant of the rasi (zodiac sign) of that individual. On this depends a person’s physical characteristics and character. Therefore, compatibility in these aspects of an individual is essential for a happy and a prosperous married life. Rasi porutham comes as a remedy compensating for the absence of other compatibilities.
Rasi porutham reveals the temperament of the person whose horoscope is considered. It then tries to bring a common ground between the two individuals contemplating marriage. Generally, the 6th position, the 8th position and the 12th position are considered to be hidden places in any horoscope. So, if the rasi of the girl or that of the boy falls in the above mentioned positions of the rasi of the other, the porutham is said not to match. Normally, if the rasi of the girl and the boy are in the 7th position to each other, it is a compatible matching and this matching is considered to be most appropriate. The 7th position of the rasi of the girl is considered most appropriate. Also, the 1st, the 3rd, the 4th, the 5th, the 9th, the 10th and the 11th positions from the rasis of the girl are said to be matching. In the 1st or Eka rasi, the rasi of the boy and the girl are one. For this to be most auspicious, the nakshatra of the girl should not fall before that of the boy’s nakshatra. Other nakshatras are not considered for matching when it is Eka rasi in case the girl’s nakshatra falls before that of the boy’s naksahtra except Krithigai, Aswini, Makam, Swathi, Rohini, Hastham, Pooradam and Sadayam.
If the rashis of both the persons desiring marriage fall in the 6th or 8th position of each other then it is called Sashtashtaga Dosham.
