Hyundai Elite i20 • Price, Variants & Specifications

Hyundai delivered an exceptional premium hatchback in the form of 'Elite i20' in 2014 that went on to become the prestigious ‘Indian Car of the Year’ (ICOTY) in 2015. With almost 300,000 customers globally, the new 2017 Elite i20, with many First -in-Segment features, is hopeful of regaining its position in the mid-segment category currently swayed away by Maruti Baleno. The updated premium hatchback comes with minor changes on the top end Asta variant. Two new colors -: Passion Red and Polar White are included in the new avatar of the hatchback with the introduction of the first in segment dual tone exteriors with black and orange interiors for the sporty look. 

The new Elite i20 promises to be better value for money than the outgoing model, and the many First-in features will surely enhance the appeal of the brand in terms of Safety, performance and exceptional driving experience.

New Features:

Exterior Features

The exterior of the new Elite i20 is almost the same as the outgoing model with the only exception of the higher end trim Asta. The top end trim now comes with a dual tone colour with contrasting blacked out roof. Hyundai has retained all the older colour options in the new model. The Fluidic Sculpture design still looks fresh and contemporary with the heaxgonal grille and wider hood character lines. Needless to mention the unique C pillar that enhances the premium appeal of the hatchback. 

Interior

Nothing much changed on the inside too. Elite i20 offers so much exquisite stuff to make the cabin look plush and premium. However, the company has given a new dual tone black-orange wrapped interior in the high-end variant Asta. The other variants still come in the classy black and beige scheme. The redesigned gearbox console and chrome door handles give a good ambiance to the cabin. Increased wheelbase makes the cabin feel more spacious and wider. The steering wheel is light and responsive. Good storage spaces are provided in the form of rear parcel tray, front passenger seat back pocket, sunglass holder in all the variants. The top end variant gets an additional 60:40 foldable rear seat, two 12V sockets, and fully automatic air conditioner. All variant except the base model comes equipped with an integrated 2 DIN MP3 Audio with USB, rear A/C vents, Aux-in and 1 GB internal memory that supports Bluetooth connectivity. 

When compared to Maruti Baleno, the new Hyundai Elite i20 offers 50mm longer wheelbase than Maruti Baleno. While the same can't be said about luggage storage as the 339 litres of bootspace in Maruti Baleno is 44L more than the bootspace in Elite i20.

Engine and Performance

Hyundai has played it safe by keeping the same 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.4-litre diesel unit of the outgoing model. The top end trim, however, gets a powerful 1.4-litre petrol engine that produces 99 BHP of peak power and 132 Nm of torque.  The new Elite i20 comes in three transmission modes. The 1.2-litre petrol is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, and the 1.4 litre is available with a 4-speed automatic transmission while the 1.4-litre diesel comes with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Safety Features

The new Elite i20 offers standard dual front airbags across all variants. The Sportz, Asta and Asta (O) trim also have ABS and the top end Asta (O) also has side and curtain airbags. While Baleno comes with standard dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt pre-tensioners with force safe limiters, ISOFIX child seat anchorages and pedestrian protection.

Mileage

The new Elite i20 has an ARAI certified mileage of 18.6 kmpl for both petrol engines and 22.54 kmpl for the diesel engine.

On the other hand, Maruti Baleno powered by the petrol engine claims to deliver a mileage of 21.4kmpl while the diesel version gives 27.39kmpl.

Verdict

Overall, Hyundai Elite i20 is definitely a hatchback to look for considering the mileage, low spare parts. refined tried and tested engines, after sales service network and high style quotient due to the European touch in the exterior designing. The new Elite i20 2017 received a good thumping response from the customers but the car still lags behind its other competitors in providing comprehensive safety to its passengers. But for all the other sweet things, Hyundai Elite i20 is still a game!!
