The engine and performance
Powered by a 796cc two cylinder petrol engine that generates 37 bhp at 5000 rpm and churns out a maximum torque of 59 Nm at 2500 rpm. The MPEI 32 bit electronic control module (ELM) ensures an advanced design of the machine. The engine is mated to a four-speed transmission with all syncromesh. Mileage has been its forte with the body weight and detailing kept to a minimum. The Maruti 800 offers a city mileage of 16kmpl and a 22kmpl on highways. The top speed is 144 kmph and the car touches the 100 kmph mark in 21 seconds.
The Maruti 800 has a basic, but decent hatchback design, though it is not a match for more expensive ones. The Maruti 800 looks modest and the front grille offers a basic design. The front grille sports the attractive Suzuki badge, but the front design does not have major bumps and curves. The headlamps sport clear lenses and the design of the front grille and bumper facilitate better air intake. And, the bumpers are not body-colored. The side profile too features a basic design. The curvy design found in Alto and Zen are absent. The car has green-tainted side glass in the AC variants and the car comes in four metallic or non metallic colors-superior white, silky silver, brick red and blue blaze.
The Maruti 800 provides real convenience considering the unbeatable price tag it carries. The interior may not have been lavishly designed, but it boasts of moulded lining and dual tone interior upholstery. The dashboard is simple, but elegant, and the fuel gauge and speedometer looks attractive as well. The AC is the prime interior gadget and the dashboard offers a place to accommodate music system. The rear and front seats offers decent legroom and headroom.

The Maruti 800 never compromises on standard safety features. The front wheels are fitted with disc brakes and the rear ones with drum brakes. The car comes with 12 inch wheel with radial tires. The rear suspension features a coil spring with gas filled shock absorbers. The side impact beams are capable of withstanding the impact of collision. Seat belts are included and an anti-theft system installed to avoid the car being stolen.
All in all, Mariti 800 is the best bet in the entry level hatchback segment when it comes to pricing and utility value.
