The history of The State Bank of India goes back to the establishment of Bank of Calcutta on 2 June 1806. Within the next 3 years Bank of Calcutta was re-designed as the Bank of Bengal, followed by Bank of Bombay and Bank of Madras. These three banks remained at the peak of modern banking in India until the establishment of Imperial Bank of India on 27 January 1921 by merging all the three. On 1st July 1955, during the 1st five year plan, the State Bank of India, a state owned bank, was constituted, taking over the Imperial Bank of India and has it’s headquarter in Mumbai. The centuries old bank now has 10000 own branches and 5100 branches of its associates. At present it has 173 foreign offices in 33 countries across the globe.
