Local train journey – first experience
It was nearly a month, I was in Mumbai and there was one thing, I always avoided, train journey during peak office hours. I received an appointment letter and was to join office in next 8 days. I was very happy at my first challenging job in Mumbai and at the same time was worried about train travel, though I knew, sooner or later I will have to experience this as this is the only fastest mode of transport in this city.
That day, fortunately, I got ladies special in the morning and the first day of my office started off well.
It was 6.00 pm and I longed to reach home at the earliest. Fortunately, I could wind up by 6.10 and left for CST Station. I intended to catch the first fast train to my destination. The indicator showed 6.15 Ambernath train, the train was yet to reach the platform.
I was little worried about how to step into the train and I was literally counting the co-passengers. Meanwhile, the train arrived and I was amazed by the skill with which people get into the train even before it stopped. I could not get into that train i.e. even a millimeter of my toe is not inside the train. The train left the station with many of them clinging outside the train.
Before I could think anything the next train 6.20 Kasara, arrived and left the station leaving me behind. The next 6.24 train was announced and this time, I managed to get into the train, infact, I was pushed into the train. The train started for its destination and by each stop, I was pushed some steps inside the train.
Now the time has come to exit. I had to start pushing and requesting people for 10 minutes in order to make my way to exit door through the invincible chain of human body. The train stopped at Dombivli and I was eventually led out of the train.
Thus, a sense of achievement engulfed me and I was confident to be inducted as a resident of Mumbai. This evening has become a remarkable day in my life.
Now being here for 6.5 years, I am used to this city, the unpredicted climate, vada pao and bhel vendors, traffic jams, bomb blasts, local train travel and the late sunset, which adds little extra time in the life of Mumbaikars, to fulfill their dreams
