Allergies are one of the most common medical disorders and the single largest reason for loss of working hours and loss in productivity at the work place among adults and school absence in children globally.

Types of Allergies

There are different types of allergies that normally inflict the human body and they can be explained and presented in a tabular format along with their symptoms:

Dust Allergies. Results due to inhaling of the dust particles in the air when performing household chores

The symptoms include runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, Asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath.

Eye Allergies. Causes may be due to outdoor air borne allergens such as tree, grass and weed pollens. Cigarette smoking, diesel exhausts are the other causes of eye allergies. The common type of eye allergy is allergic conjunctivitis.

Symptoms include itching sensation in and around the eyes, watery discharge from eyes, may be accompanied with nasal allergy symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose and sniffing.
Food Allergies. Occurs due to consumption of milk or dairy products such as cow’s milk, eggs, nuts, fish, peanuts, legumes, soya beans etc. Symptoms due to food allergens may cause swelling of lips and throats, cramps and diarrhea. Allergens when absorbed into the blood stream may cause hives or urticaria, anaphylaxis.

Insect Sting Allergies. Insect sting allergies occur due to allergens injected into the skin directly by an insect bite or by sting. Serious insect sting allergies include reactions to wasp, honeybees and hornet stings.

Symptoms of insect sting allergens include difficulty in breathing, sharp drop in blood pressure, anaphylaxis, swelling of tongue, dizziness, cardiac arrest and unconsciousness.
Latex Allergy. causes of latex allergy arise due to frequent exposure to latex products such as gloves, condoms. Latex allergy is commonly observed in health care workers. Symptoms of latex allergy may be swelling, redness, itchiness on the areas of the body that encountered latex products. Some other symptoms include stuffy nose, wheezing and difficulty in breathing.

Mold Allergy. This type of allergy comes under environmental allergies. The molds can be found in both indoor and outdoor locations of a household producing spores that can become airborne and ends up on the surfaces such as wallboard, wood panels, leather and paper products. The dust from these spores when inhaled causes mold allergy.

Symptoms of mold allergy include allergic rhinitis, asthma, allergic rhinitis etc.
Pet Allergies. Pet allergies arise from domestic animals such as cats, dogs and any feathers, droppings or excreta of these animals may produce allergens or allergen exposure Symptoms of due to pet allergy may result in sneezing, wheezing. About twenty to thirty percent of individuals with asthma may have pet allergy symptoms.

Rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis or hay fever is a result of excessive mucus being produced by the nasal glands that results in congestion or blockage of nose.

Symptoms of rhinitis include runny nose, sneezing, stuffy nose, itching.
Sinusitis. Allergies may result in allergic fungal sinusitis. Symptoms of sinusitis involve thick nasal discharge that may contain pus and/or blood.
Skin Allergies. Skin allergies is a result of contact of skin with allergens or thing that irritates the skin. These allergens may due to some products such as detergents, soaps, plants or any other chemicals. Symptoms include reddishness, rash, blisters, itching and burning sensations on the skin.
Other Allergies. Other allergies include allergies from drugs such as penicillin, flu vaccines or other antibiotics. Symptoms include skin rashes, nausea, and anaphylaxis.
