Diabetes mellitus is the name of a disease in medical terminology which is commonly known as diabetes. High level of sugar in the blood is the effect of this disease.

Diabetes is caused due to two reasons. The pancreas in the body produces insulin that helps in converting the sugar (glucose) into energy. When the production of insulin is hampered in the body the sugar level rises in the blood. This is known as Type 1 diabetes.

In the case of the other type of diabetes the tissue cells of the body primarily do not respond to the effect of insulin that is produced by the body. Adding to this, the production of insulin may or may not be sufficient. This kind of diabetes is known as Type 2 diabetes.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

There are certain signs/ symptoms in a patient that indicates the presence of diabetes. Enlisted below are the different general symptoms for the different types of diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 diabetes symptoms

These symptoms are normally severe and come on abruptly in a person.

  1. Excessive thirst and frequent urination:

Diabetes causes excess sugar in the blood due to which the kidneys are under severe pressure to overwork, filtering out the waste products. When the kidneys are not able to keep up, the excess sugar is leaked into the urine. This triggers frequent urination which then results in dehydration causing excessive thirst.

  2. Weakness or fatigue:

A person affected with diabetes is prone to getting weak easily. This may be caused due to many factors. One cause is dehydration which is caused by increased urination. The other cause is body’s inability to convert the sugar into energy that it requires.

  3. Weight loss:

When sugar is emitted out of the body through urination one may also lose calories in the process. Also diabetes does not let the sugar from reaching the body’s tissue cells leading to continuous hunger. Despite hunger, the combined effect of both of the above mentioned reasons result in rapid weight loss.

  4. Blurred vision:

Diabetes symptoms sometimes affect the vision as well. High sugar levels in the blood attract the fluids from the tissues underlying the lenses of the eyes. If undiagnosed, gradually diabetes disrupts the blood flow in the blood vessels in the retina which may cause vision problems leading to blindness.

These symptoms of type 1 diabetes can be found in the patients suffering from type 2 diabetes as well.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms

The symptoms of Type 2 diabetes normally go unchecked as they do not seem serious. These symptoms are exclusive to Type 2 diabetes.

  1. Cuts take long time to heal: Diabetes is considered as a disease that slows down the healing process of the body.
  2. Yeast infections: Body’s ability to combat infections is also affected by diabetes.
  3. Leg pain: Diabetes is known to damage the nerves by disrupting the blood circulation due to excess of sugar. This in its initial stages causes only pain in the legs.
