There are many different kinds of eye diseases, but there are a few that are really famous and common. Here are a few types of eye diseases that are quite common:
- Cataract: In fact, cataract is probably the most natural and the most common type of eye disease. This is the eye disease in which the transparent lens in the eye becomes cloudy and milky. This can make objects go blurry for the
person who has cataract and it can be responsible for really bad vision as well.
Who is in danger: Cataract is not considered as a different type of disease because it was believed to be a normal issue that during old age. So, almost anybody who is old is in danger of acquiring cataract.
Causes of cataract: As the human body ages, a chemical change occurs in the lens of the human eye, which makes it turn a little milky or solidified. It can also be caused due to diabetes, dehydration, smoking, low calcium levels, other eye diseases, etc.
Symptoms of cataract: The eye will be milky or clouded. The person will experience some blurry vision or lack of vision as well or double vision. There might also be a decrease in the recognition ability of colours.
Treatment for cataract: It is said that if cataract is left untreated, it just gets worse. Eye disease treatment is necessary in this situation and the treatment is usually surgery. The surgery removes the clouded lens from the eye and implants other new lens. There are different ways of doing the same operation. It is quite a common operation with a really high success rate and only minor side effects or later problems.
- Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a disease that is caused by a steep increase in the pressure that is applied on the eye. The optic nerve and the retina are damaged in this condition, as a result of which there can be a decrease in clarity
of vision or loss of vision as well. However, one of the biggest problems with glaucoma is the fact that it can only be realized when the person has already developed visual impairment.
Types of glaucoma: There are many types of eye diseases Glaucoma. The four main types are Primary open angle glaucoma, primary closed angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and infantile glaucoma.
Symptoms of glaucoma: Some common symptoms of eye disease glaucoma are eye pain, severe head ache, seeing spots or flashes of light, partial vision etc.
Treatment for glaucoma: Since glaucoma is usually diagnosed only after vision has been damaged, the only solution is to go in for an operation. Glaucoma is not a disease that can generally be avoided.
- Retinal detachment: In these kinds of eye diseases, the retina separates itself from the back of the eye. This separation causes a tear that can build in a matter of hours or take long weeks.
Causes of retinal detachment: One of the biggest causes for retinal detachment is age. In many types of eye diseases, age causes problems. The vitreous body, in this case, solidifies, which causes it to contract and tear away from the retina. Surgery, myopia, eye injuries, etc. could also contribute towards this.
Symptoms of retinal detachment: As in many kinds of eye diseases, retinal detachment is also characterized by loss of vision, seeing specks or flashes of light etc. Along with this, patients can also experience sharp pain in the eyes.
Treatment for retinal detachment: Eye disease treatment needs to happen as soon as possible to prevent any future problems. If the tear in the retina is small, it can be fixed with laser surgery. Surgical repair is the only way to go about this disease. While the retina can be fixed back, one cannot say that this would be problem-less. Even this might lead to loss of vision.
- Dry Eyes: Dry eyes are eyes where sufficient tears are not secreted. When not reflecting human emotions, tears have a special effect on the cornea. When the tear production is not up to the normal level, the eyes will become dry
and start burning, thereby creating problems. The tear supply is also what gets rid of all the waste from the surface of the cornea so it is vital.
Causes of dry eyes: Aging, like for all other types of eye diseases, is a cause for this one as well. This can be related to conjunctiva as well, and Sjogren 's syndrome too.
Symptoms of dry eyes: The symptoms of eye disease are important to find the treatment. The symptoms of eye disease usually are pain in the eye, burning of the eye and excessive wetness as well (when the eye or the surface is really dry, it becomes more stimulated to produce tears).
Treatment for dry eyes: There are a few treatments for this. The right eye disease treatment cannot be determined, however, one can try using isotonic artificial tears, thermal cautery and closure of the puncti etc.
- Strabismus: Strabismus is better known by its layman name- the squint. It is the condition in which the eyes are misaligned, so the two eyes fix on two different things at the same time. There are many different ways in which
the eye could be aligned as well.
Causes of strabismus: A lot of people have strabismus because it is hereditary. The other most common cause for eye disease is trauma (which causes secondary strabismus). Other common cause for eye disease could be nervous palsy, head injury, heart disease, vascular disease etc.
Treatment for strabismus: Strabismus is not a disease that can be treated through medication. The eye disease treatment needs to be a combination of procedures. Usually, there is a large amount of visual therapy involved in order to train the brain to focus and fuse two images into one picture, so that the eyes will eventually start staring at one object for a greater length of time. Glasses are also prescribed at times. In some cases, stereopsis might also be developed for the same reason.
- Diabetic retinopathy: Diabetes can also cause one of the biggest types of eye disease. In this type of eye disease, the retina gets swollen and this can lead to nerve damage or even blood leakage. At this stage, the person's
eyesight would still remain normal, or above average. Diabetic retinopathy is actually a lead cause for eye disease. If left untreated, it can actually turn into a case of visual impairment as well.
Causes of diabetic retinopathy: It is caused due to diabetic conditions. Under these conditions, the body is not capable of handling the amount of blood sugar present in the blood, which can affect all other organs, not just the eye.
Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy: Of course, there might be some swelling that could point towards symptoms of eye disease. There could also be some slight problems with the person's vision as well.
Treatment for diabetic retinopathy: The treatment is very vital at this stage because any microvascular damage could lead to haemorrhage or even loss of vision on a permanent basis. Eye drops could be used for this. Of course, laser therapy would be the best option at this point in order to seal the blood cells in the eye for once and for all.
- Uveitis: Uveitis is a type inflammation that happens on the uvea of the eye. This is the part that includes the iris, ciliary body and the choiroid. Nutrients that are required all around the eye is transferred through the uvea,
which is why it becomes a problem for the whole eye when only the uvea is affected.
Causes of uveitis: The causes of eye disease are quite varied- it can be due to contusion injuries in your eye, arthritis, lens induced uveitis, leprosy etc.
Symptoms of uveitis: The symptoms of eye disease are quite common again. The eyes will be sensitive, there will be pain in or redness of the eyes, blurring vision, etc.
Treatment for uveitis: The treatment for this type of eye disease can be done through the help of anti- inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids. Cycloplegics are also used for the same purpose. Apart from the medication, a person can visit the doctor to actually use laser surgery on the eye.
There are many such types of eye disease. The symptoms and causes will certainly help people come to a better conclusion about the body and treatment.
