Heart Attack Symptoms - Heart Attack Causes and Treatment

What is a heart attack?

Heart attack occurs when the blood supply to a part of the heart muscle is severely reduced or stopped. This happens when one of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle is blocked.

It could be a heart attack if you experience

  • A pain in the centre of the chest that can range from a mild feeling of tightness to an agonizing crushing sensation
  • Pain that comes suddenly or appears gradually which may be continuous or intermittent.

Common Symptoms of a Heart Attack

  • Arm Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Chest pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling of indigestion
  • Heart burn
  • Sweating and Shortness of breath

In the event of heart attack

If you experience the above for more than 5 minutes, call your local doctor or rush to the nearest Cardiac Centre. Typically 90% to 95% of heart attack victims who make it to a hospital on time survive. Studies have indicated that a majority of people survive an attack with little or not heart damage when medication is administered within 60 minutes of the onset of symptoms.

Therefore if you notice any of the above symptoms,

  • Call your doctor - describe your symptoms to your physician, so that he/she can advise and assist you to get you to a hospital with the necessary facilities.
  • Get to the nearest hospital by quickest means. If your hospital has an emergency response team, ask for their assistance in getting you there.
  • Chew Aspirin - Aspirin prevents blood from clotting, according to research, chewing on tablet immediately after symptoms of a heart attack can decrease death rates by 25%.
