Regenerative Medicine - Stem Cell Research and Stem Cells Therapy
Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research
How wonderful it would be to think of a treatment that helps our granny to regain her health weakened by spinal injury, a treatment that liberates a diabetic patient from the regular dose of insulin injection?
For years, human have been trying to regenerate or manipulate ailing parts of the body. The early experiments with bone marrow revealed the existence of stem cells in the body, which has the capacity to self renew into various types of cell types, leading to a new therapy using healthy stem cells. Stem cells based medicine will bring in a new era with a new way to treat hitherto untreatable diseases.
This therapy sound like a fiction but such treatment modalities are developing now with the aid of the regenerative medicine. Unlike traditional treatment, Regenerative Medicine is a new way of treating diseases using tissues and cells grown in-vitro (outside the body). It's a combination of stem cells, the base to support these cells and the growth factors to enhance the ability of cells to regenerate or heal completely.
The stem cells are not the regular cell, by which the body is made up of. The stem cells have the ability to divide and renew over a period of time. The greatness of this cell is that it is an unspecialized cell which can be differentiated into specific cell types like heart cells, neural cells etc carrying out that specific functions.
Now, where from these stem cells origin? Broadly, it can be divided into two, sourced from the patient itself (autologous cells) or from the human donor (allogenic cells). The main sources of stem cells are Adult stem cells, Embryonic stem cells, Cord blood stem cells.
Adult stem cells have been found in many tissues viz, skin, bone marrow, liver, brain etc. Embryonic stem cell is collected from a 5 - 6 days embryo. Cord blood stem cells can be obtained from the umbilical cord of a new born baby.
The ethical, moral and scientific issues associated with embryonic stem cells leaves adult stem cells and cord blood stem cell as a significant candidate for stem cell therapy.
Presently the therapies to address various unmet medical needs are in preclinical and clinical phases. The known and practiced treatment using stem cell is the bone marrow transplantation and recently, cord blood transplantation is also in news.
The stem cell therapy may find a relief for the people suffering from cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, spinal-cord injuries, and many other disorders
There are numerous limitations which Difficulties in identifying stem cells, growth factors or conditions to be employed to differentiate the cells, tissue rejections, dosage, route of administration, frequency of stem cell infusion etc are some of the areas which need to be addressed to come up with treatment for most of the debilitating diseases.
The past and ongoing researches world over aims at cultivating transparency and adopting well regulated stem cell research programs accelerating progress towards new stem cell based treatment.
Life is hope, but, for there to be life, there must be health, and creating the healthiest life possible for you or someone you love requires that you keep moving forward as long as there is still breathe to draw from. Regenerative Medicine has brought healing where all hope of healing had been lost.
