Tips on potty training for kids
Potty training also known as toilet training is an essential practice children should be trained by the early childhood itself. Nappies are the solution in the infancy and potty training means an end to the use of napkins and frequent nappy change schedule. Potty training is the entire process of training a child to use the toilet for urination and defecation. Toilet training just doesn't mean insisting your child to go to bathrooms whenever they feel the need of it, but preparing the child mentally and training them along with arranging and providing all the equipments, is in fact, potty training. There are several basic tips parents should know to start potty training for children, also certain equipments to be purchased. Let us see how a child can be trained to use toilets and putting an end to the use of diapers.
Child friendly toilets
When you feel that your kids are ready to be trained on the use of toilet, then get your toilets altered into kids friendly. Kids-friendly toilet means arranging small size and reachable toilet equipments. The common toilet seats are too big for kids. Buy them attractive, small size toilet seats. There are multiple varieties of child toilet seats available in the stores. Buy them a seat with handles to be in control. If possible fix a small and reachable wash basin and easy to use sprayers.
Create it a routine practice
Once you have started toilet training, make it a habitual practice for the children. Consistency is the only way to insist them to follow it as an everyday practice. Kids may not adhere to particular toilet timings as they may not find it necessary. But put them on with toilet dress and make them to sit on the potty at certain times every day. This is the basic training to help them to make it a routine. Gradually, the child will accept it as a part of routine and will feel the urge to go to toilet at the designated times. Forceful compulsion to go to toilet is not the right way of training.
Invite the interests of kids
Kids may not realize the importance of going to toilets and urinating or defecating. Parents, as a part of the training, need create an interest in kid to go to toilet whenever he/she feels the urge. Show them how useful it is to urinate in the potty instead in the nappy. Remove the nappy and tell them that if they do not go to the toilet, the dress will be wet or the bed will be dirty. In such methods, gradually, the child can be taught of the importance of using the toilets. Buying them colorful potty or coloring the toilet with the images of cartoon characters etc... may make kids feel the toilet an interesting place to go.
Independence is everything
Teach them the ways of using the potty and accessories and give them independence to use them. Following the child to the toilet is not an accepted practice as the presence of parents will make the kid a slow learner. Let them use the potty their own and it will be training to use the ordinary toilets in future. Letting them alone in the toilet will foster confidence too.
Teach them when to use it
Buying them potty boxes and taking them to toilet at certain time is not the whole of potty training. Teach them to decide themselves when to go to the toilet. Tell child what are the sensations of the urgency of urinating or defecating. Train them to go to toilet before he/she is done it in the nappy itself. Removing the nappy and leaving kids with ordinary dresses will make them to be conscious of not wetting the dress.
Teach them clean habits
Teaching kids clean toilet habits will help them in the future life. In schools or kindergartens, they will have to handle all their needs alone, though teachers will be there to help. Teach them to use the potty effectively and tell them how to wash before and after. Insist on the importance of keeping the toilet clean and dry. Though, kids may not be required to clean the toilet, when they become elder children, the habit of keeping toilet clean will help them to keep the personal toilets dry and clean.
