Outgoing French President Nicolas Sarkozy Thursday accepted the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
"Prime Minister Francois Fillon presented today (Thursday) to the President of the Republic the resignation of the government, which was accepted," Xinhua quoted a statement from the presidential Elysee Palace as saying.
Fillon was the only prime minister during Sarkozy's five-year term.
Socialist Party leader Francois Hollande will be sworn in as president May 15. He will then pick a Socialist prime minister and a new cabinet.
