Eight workers died after falling unconscious while working in a steel plant in China's northeastern Liaoning province, an official said Tuesday.

The workers fainted Monday evening while repairing an electrical device in a small underground workshop in the plant in Dalian city, Xinhua reported.

Preliminary blood tests showed no sign of electrocution but there were signs of carbon monoxide and other unidentified gases in the blood, said a local official.
