New Delhi, Jan 5

Leaders of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Tuesday met union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and requested him to advice the Delhi government to let them work for better management of its slum department.

"Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain, leader of MCD house Subhash Arya and Standing Committee chairman Ram Kishan Singhal requested Chidambaram to advise the city government that the MCD is allowed to dispose of its own properties (properties of MCD's Slum and Jhuggi Jhopri Department) so that it could generate revenue by way of interest on income," said an official statement here.

"With that interest, MCD could provide better civic amenities in slum clusters," it added.

"Chidambaram patiently heard the delegation and said that in principle he agrees that adequate funds should be provided for development of Slum & JJ (Jhuggi Jhopri) clusters and education sectors. He said that he would get the matter examined in consultation with the Delhi government and take appropriate action in public interest at the earliest," the press release said.
