New Delhi, March 16

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh Tuesday said the construction of helipads atop residential buildings, as proposed by the Maharashtra government, was not viable and wouldn't be allowed.

"We have raised concerns over the issue as it will cause noise pollution, which will affect the health of the people," the minister told reporters here.

The Maharashtra government had last year amended the development control rules to allow helipads atop residential and commercial buildings, even in coastal, environmentally sensitive and silent zones.

According to the Maharashtra government, the helipads would not only save businessmen commuting time but they could also be used for rescue operations and disaster relief in an emergency.
