Hundreds of angry people staged a protest Monday outside a police station in Orissa's Bhadrak district over the alleged rape of a woman by a police officer. The government in the evening ordered a crime branch probe into the incident, an official said.

The woman was raped when she went to the official residence of Narayan Chandra Nayak, 50, the inspector in-charge of Dhusauri police station, some 150 km from here.

"Nayak was arrested today (Monday) and produced before a court," sub-divisional police officer Suresh Das told IANS.

On April 30, the 30-year-old woman went to meet Nayak in connection with a dowry complaint she had lodged against her husband and in-laws.

Das said the victim complained that Nayak called her to his official residence near the police station on the pretext of helping her and raped her.

The woman is a resident of Lenkasahi village.

Hundreds of residents staged a protest before the police station demanding a high level probe into the incident, a home department official told IANS.
