Five people have been shot dead by Maoist guerrillas in a village in Bihar's Sheohar district, police said Saturday.

Nearly 100 armed Maoists stormed Ramvan village in Sheohar, about 200 km from here, late Friday night and killed five people and set fire to around a dozen shops in the village market, a police official said.

District authorities have deployed security forces in the village and launched operations against the rebels, he added.

Sheohar district is considered a Maoist stronghold.
