An inter-state gang of vehicle thieves was busted Thursday with the arrest of eight people in this Punjab town, police said.

The police recovered six Bolero jeeps and three motor-cycles from their possession.

"They used to steal new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) by using specially designed keys. They used to change its engine and number plate and sell it to gullible customers," Manmohan Sharma, deputy superintendent of police, Rajpura, told IANS.

"Nearly 25 cases have been registered against the gang members in Chandigarh and different parts of Punjab," he added.

The gang was active in Rajpura town, around 45 km from Chandigarh, for the last three years.
