High alert in Kerala: Achuthanandan

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 27

Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Thursday informed the assembly that the police has been told to maintain high alert across the state following terror attacks in Mumbai that began Wednesday night and left at least 101 people dead and 250 others injured.

"There should be no reason for panic in the state in the wake of terror attacks that took place in Mumbai yesterday (Wednesday)," said Achuthanandan.

State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told reporters that there was high alert at the pilgrimage centre of Sabarimala, where the peak season is on.

"The police are doing their job there and are leaving nothing to chance," said Balakrishnan.

The police in Kochi have briefed the representatives of leading hotels to keep a vigil on people who want to take rooms.

The police have reinforced security arrangements at railway stations and bus stations. Security personnel were on alert at the state borders.

Vice Admiral Sunil K. Damle, flag officer commanding-in-chief, Southern Naval Command, told reporters on board INS Tir at Kochi that the navy was maintaining strict vigil in the waters.

"There are reports that two militants have escaped through the sea and the navy is doing its best," said Damle.
