Poojashree Venkatesha was the only Indian Tuesday to qualify for the second round as her compatriots Shalini Sahoo and Parul Goswami lost their first-round matches in the $50,000 Women's ITF tournament at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA).
Poojashree, a wild card holder, found it easy against Chinese Shaozhuo Liu with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the first round while Shalini and Parul went down in straight sets.
Shalini, the only Indian qualifier to make the main draw, went down 3-6, 0-6 to Emily Webly-Smith of England while Parul, also a wild card holder, lost 1-6, 4-6 to Serbian Bojana Jovanovski.
But the biggest upset of the day was second seed Estonian Margit Ruutel losing 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 to Megan Moulton-Levy of the US.
Except Margit, there were no other upsets for the top seeds as Masa Zec-Peskiric of Slovakia, seeded first, won 6-2, 6-2 against Laura Siegemund of England.
Third seed Sandra Zahlavova won 6-3, 6-4 against Japanese Anastasia Malhotra while fourth seed Anna Gerasimou of Greece defeated Russian Marina Melnikova 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4.
