An Indian organisation that works for animals has gifted a photograph of two puppies to the recently-married Beatles legend Paul McCartney and New York businesswoman Nancy Shevell.

The puppies in the picture were rescued from the turmeric city of Sangli in Maharashtra, and have been named Paul and Nancy after the couple, who got married Oct 9.

"Our team rescued two puppies who were running out of fear after having witnessed an accident which killed their mother in Sangli. We have named them Paul and Nancy in the couple's honour," said Animal Rahat Programme Manager Sudheesh Nair.

McCartney is an advocate for animal rights and vegetarianism, and is active in campaigns against seal hunting. His daughter, Stella, a fashion designer, is also an animal rights activist. She refuses to use fur or leather in her collections.
