Beijing, May 26

China has remained the world's biggest producer of magnesium since 1999, with last year's output accounting for over 85 percent of the world's total.

The country produced 660,000 tonnes of magnesium last year, the China Daily reported Saturday.

It is estimated that the yearly magnesium output will reach 1.5 million tonnes during the 2011-2015 period, of which 700,000 tonnes will be exported annually.

Shandong province is famous for its magnesium resources, with a minimum verified reserve of 350 million tonnes.
