Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio Tuesday announced a cash award of Rs.25 lakhs for archer Chekrovolu Swuro for becoming an Olympian.

Rio, accompanied by his colleagues, are in London to witness the Olympic Games. They had also announced that Swuro would be awarded with Rs.1 crore if she wins an Olympic medal in the individual events.

Swuro, however, made a first round exit from the individual round of the archery event.

But still Rio congratulated Chekrovolu for becoming the first Naga Olympian in more than 60 years, after footballer T. Ao, who was independent India's first captain and led the national team in the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

"Her (Chekrovolu) feat is an inspiration for each and every Naga to reach for the highest levels of excellence and her achievement will motivate and inspire the future generations of Nagas to excel on the international stage," Rio said.
