40 killed in Iran quake

At least 40 people were killed in Iran Saturday when a 6.2 magnitude quake struck, authorities said.

The quake jolted northwestern Iran around 4.30 p.m. The epicentre was located in Varzaghan region near Ahar city. About 400 people were injured, Xinhua reported.

The quake was followed by another one measuring 6 on the Richter scale.

Some of the injured were shifted to hospitals in Tabriz and Ardebil, head of Iran's emergency organization Gholamreza Ma'soumi said.

In Tabriz city, where the quake was felt strongly, people rushed out of their houses in panic. Phone networks were disrupted in the region.
