Khatami to run against Ahmadinejad in Iran presidential race

Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami Sunday confirmed press reports that he will run against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the presidential election in June.

"I herewith announce my serious intention to take part in the June 12 presidential elections," Khatami, 65, told reporters in Tehran.

Khatami, who was president from 1997 to 2005, is the architect of the Iranian reform movement and his main vision is to create an Islamic democracy.
