London, Aug 14

A bank employee in Britain has been arrested for allegedly stealing 720,000 pounds (over $1 million) from his branch, without letting his bosses realise the continuing embezzlement for seven months.

The employee, working in Halifax bank's branch in Worcestershire's Redditch town, is alleged to have stolen money from the ATMs - first in cash and later electronically, The Sun reported.

On Monday, Halifax -- known for its Who Gives You Xtra? ad campaigns -- confirmed that an employee had been suspended.

But an employee said the whole episode seems unbelievable. "We cannot believe that a staff member has been accused of allegedly single-handedly stealing this much. Customers need to know how relaxed and lax the company has become."
