A man in Russia has been detained while stealing gunpowder from a military test site which he wanted to use as "firewood" for his stove.

Russian Interior Ministry Tuesday said police detained a man in the Volga federal district as he tried to steal a load of gunpowder from a military test site.

The man in the Mari El Republic snuck onto the base through a fence hole and took a package of 98 explosive tubes each measuring 30 cm.

Later, the detained man told police that he intended to use the gunpowder as "firewood" to fuel the stove.

He has been charged with illegal storage of explosives and, if convicted, faces up to three years in prison.
