A violent clash between rival Brazilian soccer fans Sunday left one dead and many injured in Rio de Janeiro, Xinhua reported Monday.

Tomas Coelho was shot dead during a fight involving more than 50 supporters from rival clubs Vasco da Gama and Flamengo.

Violence broke out when a bus of Flamengo fans en route to the Engenhao stadium for Sunday's match against Vasco da Gama stopped at a gasoline station in Rio.

The supporters stepped off the bus to confront Vasco fans who had gathered at an adjacent bar.

A brawl ensued with fans exchanging gunfire before police arrived at the scene.

Police said another man suffered a bullet wound.
