Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 29

Onam festivities have peaked in Kerala, with Thiru Onam celebrated Wednesday.

Thiru Onam is the most important day for Keralites in the nearly week-long festival.

The most important event in the festivities is the 26-course Thiru Onam lunch, always eaten on a plantain leaf. The meal would include mouth-watering payasams.

Marxist leader V.S. Achuthanandan and his family Tuesday evening reached his ancestral home in Alappuzha to celebrate Onam.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has not said where he will have his Onam lunch.

The state-owned Kerala State Beverages Corp's liquor shops will stay open Wednesday.

Like last year, heavy rains have dampened the spirit of Onam.
