The Congress Friday expressed the hope that it would be able to convince its allies DMK and Trinamool Congress on the "unpleasant but unavoidable" decision on the diesel price hike.

Congress spokesperson P.C. Chacko admitted that allies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) were "unhappy" over the fuel price hike.

Addressing reporters here, he said he was confident about convincing them on the "unpleasant but unavoidable" decision.

According to Chacko, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had asked the government to consider avoiding the decision. On Thursday, the government announced a Rs.5 hike in the price of diesel and limited subsidised gas cylinders to six per family per year.

Meanwhile, party sources said many Congress chief ministers had demanded a rollback of the fuel price hike.
