Alappuzha (Kerala) Sep 23 (IANS) In an accident at an unmanned level crossing near here, the Hapa Express bound for Tirunelveli (in Tamil Nadu) rammed into a car, leaving five dead and one seriously injured.

The accident occurred Sunday evening. Among the dead is a three-year-old child.

Local legislator A.M. Arif said that people had earlier demanded that the level crossing be better monitored, but the demands had fallen on deaf ears.

"We will have no other option but to go on a protest to open the eyes of the authorities," Arif said.

The car was smashed, and parts of the vehicle lay strewn at the accident site.

Locals and passengers in the train were the first rescue workers at the site. Two people who were in the car were brought dead to a private hospital in Kochi.

The car was a tourist taxi, owned by K.S. Sumesh, a resident of Chertala in Kerala. Suresh was among the dead.
