Kolkata, Oct 19

Moroccan Karim Bencherifa is all set to take over as Mohun Bagan’s chief football coach from November, the city giant announced Friday.

“We have held talks with Bencherifa and he has agreed to take the coaching responsibility of our club. Although formalities are yet to be finalised, he would join the club Nov 18,” assistant general secretary Srinjoy Bose told mediapersons here.

“Mridul Banerjee will be the assistant coach of the club and would start training with the players as soon as possible,” said Bose.

Bencherifa, now coach of Salgaocar football club, has a contract with the Goan outfit till May 2013. However, as per the exit clause Bencherifa will have to coach the Goan club till Nov 17th, a day ironically enough, when Salgaocar are set to play Mohun Bagan at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Bencherifa, had coached Bagan previously 2008-2010, but quit the Kolkata club later. The club, though, expressed happiness on getting back his services.

“He is one the best coaches in Indian football and we are glad that he has agreed to take over the coaching reins,” said Bose.

Although the club officials refused to divulge the details of the new contract, Bencherifa is widely rumoured to become the best paid coach in Indian club football.

Earlier, Bagan coach Santosh Kashyap resigned Oct 13, taking responsibility for the club's poor performance in the current season so far.

Kashyap, a former Air India coach, was under pressure after Mohun Bagan's early exit in the Federation Cup and back-to-back losses in the I-League.
