The Samajwadi Party (SP) and its rival in Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tuesday invoked Mahatma Gandhi while expressing their reservations on FDI in retail.
SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said "Gandhi would not have allowed FDI in retail" while urging the central government to drop the policy, which he said was anti-poor.
BSP leader Dara Singh Chauhan said: "It (FDI in retail) is an insult to Gandhi."
They were participating in the debate in the Lok Sabha on FDI in retail.
Both the parties support the UPA from outside and would play a crucial role in the vote Wednesday.
