Lucknow, June 5

A Uttar Pradesh trial court Friday jailed a man for life for shooting dead socialite Meher Bhargava here three years ago because she objected to obscene remarks passed at her young daughter-in-law.

Additional District Judge cum Special Judge (Gangsters Act) Anil Kumar sentenced Sunny Rawat but let off three co-accused - Ajai Prakash, Pramod Kumar Singh and Jai Prakash - due to want of evidence.

Two other accused, including dreaded gangster Sachin Pahari, were killed in a gun battle with police a few days after the murder.

Fifty-five-year-old Bhargava was shot at point blank range just outside her apartment building Feb 28, 2006, after she protested against obscene remarks made by the accused at her daughter-in-law.

Hailing from a well-known family of Congress leaders, Bhargava's murder evoked sharp criticism, widespread condemnation and street protests from various sections of society.
