Sensex opens in the red, down 74 points

Negative sentiments continued to prevail at Indian equities markets with a key index losing more than 74 points at the opening bell Wednesday.

Within five minutes of starting trade, the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, which opened lower at 14,978.5 points was ruling at 14,883.06 points, 74.85 points or 0.5 percent below Tuesday's close.

The S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too slipped, moving down 0.61 percent to rule at 4,490.35 points around the same time.

However, broader market indices were outperforming the market, with the BSE midcap index ruling 0.39 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index moving up 0.47 percent.
