Noting that attacks on Indian students in Australia have not stopped despite the best efforts of the government, the Supreme Court Monday directed the centre to take more stringent measures to ensure the students' safety.
"We should not push the problem under the carpet," the Supreme Court said, adding that safety of students was very important.
The court asked the centre for a detailed affidavit on the issue in two weeks.
Attorney General of India G.E. Vahanvati assured the court that the Australian government was taking adequate measures to deal with the assaults.
Earlier this month, the apex court had directed the centre to explain the steps initiated to ensure safety of Indian students facing racist attacks in Australia and the measures taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The court passed the order on a public interest petition filed by advocate D.K. Garg.
There are nearly 93,000 Indians studying in Australia.
