A local court here Saturday sentenced a 21-year-old engineering student to seven years' rigorous imprisonment after he was convicted of repeatedly raping a woman and making her pregnant after promising to marry her.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 on the convict, Abhishek, and told him to pay a compensation of Rs.100,000 to the victim.
The 24-year-old victim, who is now a mother of a 10-month-old girl, had filed a complaint against Abhishek in March 2008 when she was two months pregnant, and he was soon arrested.
The woman had to leave her job with a telecom company after the case was widely reported in the media. She knew Abhishek, a resident of neighbouring Panchkula town, for more than a year before he duped her.
A DNA report confirmed that he is the father of the child even though Abhishek had earlier denied it.
