Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Thursday advocated minimally invasive spinal surgery to reduce blood loss, less pain as well achieving a better recovery result.
"Traditionally surgeries are performed through two inch incision which result in excessive blood loss and the patient has to go through lot of pain and immobility. The benefit of this new procedure lies in minimal dissection of tissues, which reduces blood loss and post surgery pain," said Sumit Sinha, a professor of neurosurgery at AIIMS.
This procedure is very safe and accurate in treating spine-related problems which are very common in India. It is performed through a small tube that is inserted in the skin by making an incision and a specialized micro camera is used to visualize the nerves and vertebral disc, said doctors at the ongoing Minimal Access Spinal Surgery workshop at AIIMS.
"This is another gift of technology that allows patients to be discharged on the day of surgery. All spinal disorders such as lumbar disc, slipped disc or vertebral fracture can be accurately treated with this technique," said M.C. Mishra, who heads the AIIMS' Trauma Centre where the first such surgery was done Thursday.
During the three-day workshop, young doctors will learn how to conduct this kind of surgery effectively and accurately.
