Hillary Clinton reaffirms commitment to stronger partnership with India

Washington, Aug 15

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Friday wished Indians around the world a happy Independence Day, reaffirming the deep US commitment to work with India to build a stronger partnership between the two nations.

"On this historic occasion, let me reaffirm the deep commitment of the United States to work together to build a stronger partnership between our two nations based on common interests, shared values and mutual respect," she said in a message.

Recalling her first visit to India as the America's chief diplomat, the former first lady said: "I had the honour and pleasure of visiting India only weeks ago, and experienced firsthand the warmth and vitality of the people of India.

"To all those around the world who trace their heritage from the Republic of India, I wish you a happy Independence Day," Clinton said. "Indians everywhere commemorate this day in 1947 when their nation awoke to life and freedom, and recall the sacrifices their countrymen and countrywomen made to gain that freedom."

"This anniversary serves as an inspiration to all, a reminder that open and democratic societies are best suited to helping people fulfil their dreams and aspirations," she said.

"People and political movements across the globe continue to be inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian people's message of non-violence. When you raise your flag in celebration today, be proud of the values that it represents," Clinton said.

"On this historic occasion, let me reaffirm the deep commitment of the United States to work together to build a stronger partnership between our two nations based on common interests, shared values and mutual respect."

Clinton also sent her "best wishes and congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they mark their Independence Day" and reaffirmed Washington's commitment "to stand with Pakistanis in their struggle against violent extremism."

Clinton said she looked forward to visiting Pakistan in autumn and continuing to work toward a stronger relationship with both the Government of Pakistan and its people.

Pakistanis around the world, she said can "take pride in their rich history and accomplishments, and in the words and vision of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the Quaid-e-Azam, whose efforts to bring 'unity, faith and discipline' to the people of Pakistan resulted in the creation of a great nation."
