A 65-year-old Dalit man was battling for life Sunday after allegedly being set on fire in Madhya Pradesh for cultivating his farmland that a moneylender had confiscated, police said Sunday.

Narayan Khangar was set ablaze Saturday by thugs hired by the moneylender in Magdijhara village of Shivpuri district.

Police officer Shiv Singh told IANS that the farmer had failed to pay back the money taken from the moneylender. His land was then confiscated and Narayan was asked not to work on the field.

When the moneylender's men reached the field Saturday, they saw Narayan cultivating the land. He was then set on fire. "His condition is critical," the officer said.
