Agra, Oct 1

In a swift operation Agra police rescued Bahujan Samaj Party corporator Mahendra Singh from abductors near Nunihai industrial estate in Agra, officials said Thursday.

Mahendra Singh was abducted from a main bazaar in Firozabad Wednesday evening in a Scorpio. The police quickly sprung into action and launched an operation on the Agra-Firozabad highway.

The police tried to stop the Scorpio but the speeding vehicle continued to move towards Agra. In the Nunihai area the vehicle got stuck in a traffic jam. A police jeep that was following the Scorpio blocked the way, Inspector General Braj Bhushan said.

Singh was freed and the vehicle and the seven abductors are now in police custody, he added.

Singh had to be rushed to the emergency ward of the S.N. Medical College after he began vomiting blood.

Police said the abductors continued to beat him all the way from Firozabad to Agra.

Police suspect Singh had a dispute with a contractor over a commission.
