Strong quake rocks Indonesia's Java island

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake rocked the western part of Indonesia's Java island Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, seismologists said.

The quake struck at 4.52 p.m. (0952 GMT) with its epicentre in the Sunda Strait located 187 km south-west of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake forced workers in Jakarta to evacuate buildings.

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake jolted Indonesia's Sulawesi island before dawn Friday, but there were no casualties or damage.

A magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck Indonesia's West Sumatra province Sep 30, leaving 1,117 people dead and more than 100,000 buildings severely damaged or destroyed.
