The annual state-level rural sports championship began in this Himachal Pradesh town Thursday, an official said.

This is the second year the event is being held.

"More than 1,000 participants below the age group of 18 are participating in the four-day rural sports tournament that started Thursday in Una," J.R. Katwal, who is the state sports director, told IANS.

He said the participants have been shortlisted from rural schools across Himachal Pradesh.

"From this championship, the players will be selected for state-level tournaments," Katwal said.

Competitions in taekwondo, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, judo, wrestling, badminton, boxing and hockey will also be organised during the tournament.
