Four-goal Bayern crush Juve; joy for Real, AC Milan, CSKA

Hamburg, Dec 9

Bayern Munich hit four goals to send Juventus crashing out of the Champions League, while Michael Owen struck a hat-trick for Manchester United to end the hopes of German champions Wolfsburg in final group matches.

European giants AC Milan and Real Madrid meanwhile both progressed to the knockout stage while CSKA Moscow joined them in the last 16 with a 2-1 win at Besiktas, Tuesday.

Ivica Olic, Mario Gomez and Anatoly Timoschuk hit second-half goals for Bayern in a 4-1 triumph at Juventus to finish second in Group A behind already-qualified Girondins Bordeaux.

The French side wrapped up their campaign with a 1-0 win at Maccabi Haifa.

David Trezeguet put Juventus ahead in the showdown in Turin when he connected with Claudio Marchisio's pass to volley the ball pass Joerg Butt in goal in the 19th minute.

But it was Butt himself who levelled on the half hour when he sent Gianluigi Buffon the wrong way from the penalty spot after Olic was brought down by Martin Caceres.

Olic then struck seven minutes after the break when he mopped up after Buffon could only parry a Daniel van Buyten header, Gomez made it three from close range in the 83rd following a corner and Timoschuk added a fourth in stoppage time.

"We played very well, and that at Juventus, a top Italian team," Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said.

"The first half was super. I said nothing at half-time and that's not always the case."

Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg's hopes of reaching the knock-out stages were torpedoed by Owen's hat-trick and CSKA's victory in Istanbul in Group B.

Injury-hit United, with midfielders Michael Carrick and Darren Ferguson playing as central defenders, grabbed the opening goal shortly before half-time when Owen met a Nani cross to head in.

The home side gave themselves hope when Edin Dzeko powerfully headed in a Marcel Schaefer cross in the 56th minute, but two more goals from Owen followed in the 83rd minute and on the break a minute into stoppage time to leave United top of the group ahead of CSKA.

"The team gave everything and would have have deserved the win," Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh said.

"We should have had a penalty (a Michael Carrick foul on Makoto Hasebe in the first half). United stayed back in defence in the second half which they did well, but we didn't take the chances we had."

Real Madrid clinched top spot in Group C with a 3-1 win at Olympique Marseille, while AC Milan earned a 1-1 away draw agaist FC Zurich to finish second.

Cristiano Ronaldo blasted in a free-kick from 30 metres to put Real ahead after just five minutes but Marseille levelled through Lucho Gonzalez seven minutes later.

The French side's hopes of overhauling Milan were dashed when Raul Albiol struck a second for Real on the hour, Lucho Gonzalez missed a chance to level when he struck the bar from the penalty spot and Ronaldo scored his second with nine minutes remaining.

AC Milan went behind on the half hour in Zurich to a Milan Gajic free-kick, but Ronaldinho eased their nerves in the 64th minute by converting a penalty for which Zurich's Alain Rochat was shown a red card.

Atletico Madrid earned qualification for the Europa League despite a 3-0 home defeat to already-qualified Porto in Group D.

Group winners Chelsea were meanwhile held to a 2-2 draw by visiting APOEL Nicosia who finished last behind third-placed Atletico.
