Had he treated Delhi with the same fairness that the 'double-engine' BJP government has shown towards Ayodhya, Delhi too would have emerged as a new symbol of development, just like Ayodhya Dham."Former Delhi CM visited the Ram Temple and Hanuman Garhi temple in Ayodhya on Friday and alleged that big and influential people were being shielded while lower-level officials were being made scapegoats. The Chief Minister also slammed the Opposition for 'blowing the issue out of proportion' and cautioned against playing with public sentiments and baseless allegations against the holy city, and called for upholding the dignity associated with Lord Ram, emphasising that Ayodhya is a centre of faith for crores of people."The government will not spare any guilty party, but hurting public sentiments by making allegations without facts is inappropriate," CM Yogi said.He also urged those possessing any concrete facts or evidence related to the case to provide them to the SIT rather than engaging in public rhetoric.Targeting the Samajwadi Party and Congress, he said that those raising questions today in the name of Ayodhya and Lord Ram are the same people who denied the existence of Lord Ram and opposed the construction of the temple at Ram Janmabhoomi. The Chief Minister stated that the state government's intent is absolutely clear and the investigation is proceeding impartially. He assured that strict action, in accordance with the law, would be taken against anyone found guilty during the investigation.

He underscored the urgent need for stronger border management, enhanced surveillance systems and better coordination among central and state agencies to effectively curb drug trafficking, arms smuggling and human trafficking along the India-Myanmar border. The Chief Minister informed the meeting that the Ministry of Home Affairs has completed fencing of 50 km of the India-Myanmar border to check illegal arms and drug smuggling, while construction of an additional 80-km stretch is already underway.Reaffirming his government's commitment to the anti-drug campaign, Singh said the state administration would continue to work closely with central agencies and security forces to strengthen anti-narcotics operations and ensure that Manipur remains at the forefront of the fight against drug trafficking and organised cross-border crime in the region.

The Cabinet has approved the constitution of a high-level committee chaired by Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai, that will be tasked with preparing a draft law, thereby fulfilling one of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s major electoral promises. With this decision, Chhattisgarh joins a select group of states actively working on state-specific versions of the UCC.The neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh has already initiated the process and a Bill is likely in the forthcoming Monsoon Session of the Assembly. The five-member committee in Chhattisgarh will be chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, a former Supreme Court judge known for her leadership of key constitutional and legal panels.Alongside her, the committee comprises retired bureaucrats, seasoned legal experts, and senior advocates.Their mandate is to examine the current legal framework, assess the feasibility of a Uniform Civil Code in Chhattisgarh, and submit comprehensive recommendations to the government. The formation of this committee marks only the beginning of a complex and sensitive process. Over the coming months, the panel is expected to undertake a detailed study of personal laws governing marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, succession, adoption, and guardianship across different communities. It will also review landmark judgments of the Supreme Court and High Courts, consult with legal scholars, engage with social organisations, and hold discussions with representatives of various religious communities to ensure that diverse perspectives are taken into account. The government’s move is being seen as both a legal and political milestone. While the UCC has long been debated at the national level, its implementation at the state level will still take time.By setting up this committee, Chhattisgarh government indicated its intent to harmonise personal laws with constitutional principles of equality and justice, while also navigating the sensitivities of cultural and religious diversity. The draft legislation, once prepared, will likely spark wide-ranging discussions and debates, shaping the contours of how personal laws are interpreted and applied in the state.

PIL in SC seeks uniform national fire safety standards for public premises

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been moved before the Supreme Court seeking directions for the formulation and enforcement of a National Minimum Fire and Life-Safety Framework for high-risk public occupancy premises across the country, citing recurring fire tragedies in schools, hospitals, coaching centres, hotels and commercial establishments. The writ petition, filed by advocate Narendra Kumar Goswami in his personal capacity, has sought directions to the Union and state governments to establish uniform minimum fire and life-safety standards for public buildings, irrespective of the existing regulatory framework in different states. The plea contended that the existing legal framework governing fire safety remains fragmented and uneven across states and union territories, resulting in inconsistent standards and enforcement gaps that continue to endanger public safety. The PIL has sought directions for the formulation and implementation of a National Minimum Fire and Life-Safety Framework covering schools, hospitals, coaching centres, hotels, guest houses, entertainment venues, commercial buildings and other public occupancy establishments. It has prayed for effective mechanisms to ensure compliance with fire safety norms, periodic inspections, emergency preparedness, evacuation planning and accountability for violations by authorities and occupiers.Referring to a series of fire tragedies across the country, the plea said the petition was necessitated by recurring incidents exposing systemic deficiencies in fire prevention, enforcement and public safety despite the existence of various statutory provisions and judicial directions. The petition has referred to several major incidents, including the Uphaar Cinema fire, the AMRI Hospital fire, the Surat Takshashila Arcade coaching centre blaze, the Anaj Mandi fire, the Rajkot TRP Game Zone fire, the recent Malviya Nagar guest house fire in Delhi and the Aliganj coaching centre fire in Lucknow, among others."The recurring pattern of catastrophic fires demonstrates systemic regulatory failures, fragmented legal standards and inadequate enforcement mechanisms, resulting in continuing threats to public safety," the plea stated. The PIL contended that the matter raises substantial questions of law concerning the enforcement of fundamental rights under Articles 14 and 21, and the constitutional obligation of authorities to ensure reasonable safety standards in public spaces. It has also relied upon previous Supreme Court judgments, including Avinash Mehrotra v. Union of India relating to fire safety in schools and the apex court's suo motu proceedings concerning hospital fires, besides referring to the National Building Code, Model Building Bye-Laws, NDMA guidelines and the Model Fire Service Bill, 2019.The petitioner said that a representation dated June 24 had already been submitted to the Union and state authorities seeking formulation and enforcement of a National Minimum Fire and Life-Safety Framework, but no effective action had been taken.

Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming three-day state visit "historic", India's High Commissioner to Seychelles, Rohit Rathish, on Friday, said it will strengthen the bilateral partnership for the future and help to expand ties into new frontiers.

In an interview with IANS, Rathish stated that the ties between India and Seychelles are "excellent and dynamic" and noted that the relationship has intensified and gained new momentum and energy under the guidance of PM Modi.

"This is a historic visit, a state visit of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to Seychelles from June 27 to 29. As you may be aware, Seychelles is celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited as the guest of honour for this particular celebration by the President of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie. This is a historic milestone for Seychelles. We are also marking 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. India and Seychelles enjoy long-standing historic ties based on people-to-people ties and cultural affinities. We also share the values of democracy and the rule of law, and we inhabit a shared region," the envoy said.

"So, these are the anchors of our partnership for a long time and our cultural relations, our people-to-people ties even precede the establishment of diplomatic relations. In 1770, when this country was founded by French colonists and permanently settled for the first time, five Indians were part of the first settling community along with eight African slaves. So, our ties date back as far as 250 years. Today, Prime Minister's visit, I think arriving at such a historic juncture in the partnership will strengthen our partnership for the future, will help it expand into new frontiers, and hopefully strengthen our people-to-people ties as well," he added.

PM Modi will be travelling to Seychelles at the invitation of President Herminie, and is scheduled to address the Seychelles National Assembly and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

On PM Modi's engagements in Seychelles, he said: "The main objective, of course, he's the guest of honour for the 50th National Day celebrations of Seychelles. He will also have the opportunity to discuss with the Seychelles government, new frontiers of cooperation such as AI, cyber security, marine science and conservation, etc."

Rathish lauded the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening bilateral ties, calling them a "living bridge" between India and Seychelles. He also said that the diaspora members are excited to welcome PM Modi.

"The Indian diaspora in Seychelles is numerically significant when compared to the population. It has adopted Seychelles as its home for a long time. They are a living bridge between India and Seychelles and work to strengthen the socioeconomic fabric of Seychelles, as well as deepen the partnership between the two countries. As I said, just before, people-to-people ties and the human connections form the foundation of our partnership for a long time, and the Indian diaspora is proof that this is the essence of the partnership."

"They are very excited to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the PM will also have the occasion to interact with them during his visit. I would say that we will also be discussing with the Government of Seychelles, the Prime Minister and President, on how we can improve our people-to-people ties, our cultural linkages, and also our business linkages, using the Indian diaspora as a bridge again, and to see how we can work on logistics, work on bilateral trade, work on improving air and sea connectivity etc," he added.

Diplomatic ties between India and Seychelles were established after the latter's independence in 1976.
