BMW 1 Series [2013 - 2017] • Price, Variants & Specifications
Speculation has been raging about whether the BMW 1 Series will be introduced in India. The hopes the car enthusiasts soared high when the 3 Series and the 5 Series were introduced. Putting all rumours to rest, it is now official that the BMW 1 Series will be introduced in India by the end of the year 2013. BMW will import the car as CBU and it will be assembled at the plant in Chennai. This step eliminates some custom duties, enabling BMW to put a very competitive price on this smallest and most affordable of all BMW models. The car is expected to be priced around Rs. 18 to 20 lakhs. It is expected to be indirect competition with the Mercedes Benz A class.
Performance specifications of the BMW 1 Series
Small but powerful, the BMW 1 Series comes with choice of two types of engines. The diesel variant is equipped with a 2.0l engine. There are three varieties of this and they produce the power of 116 bhp, 143 bhp and 184 bhp. Probably the variant producing 143 bhp will be launched in India. The petrol engine too comes in two different varieties. These 1.6l petrol engines produce power of 136 bhp and 170 bhp. Again, it is expected that the 136 bhp model will be coming to India. There is also a distant possibility that a 168 bhp direct injection petrol engine will be eventually introduced in India. All these engine varieties are guaranteed to give you the best and most exciting driving experience. The car is built on the same platform as the BMW 3 Series and is equipped with McPherson struts and multi link rear suspension. These along with the acknowledged engineering genius of BMW are sure to deliver incomparable driving experience.
The appearance of the BMW 1 Series
In keeping with the traditional looks of the BMW the 1 Series is equipped with striking rather than attractive looks. The forward leaning kidney grille receives the shark nose treatment characteristic of all BMW cars. These have been nicely paired with a clamshell bonnet and large recessed headlight. The result is the pure BMW look at its best. This premium hatchback from BMW is going to be the smallest BMW car in India. The design has received a number of facelifts. For example, it boasts of a larger tailgate aperture as the tail lamps have been pushed to extremities. The side profile too has received treatment giving a fresh new look to the car. Still, the DNA of the BMW is apparent in every line of the car.It is the rear wheel drive layout that is supposed to lend a touch of uniqueness to this BMW 1 Series, setting it far apart and above the other hatchbacks in the market. The result is that you have a powerful and agile car which is truly a driver’s car. For those who love to drive and handle smooth and powerful machines, the BMW 1 Series will be hard to resist.
The other features
Though it is being touted as a hatchback, the BMW 1 series is closer to a saloon car in size than a traditional hatchback. It is 4.2m in length and the wheelbase has been stretched by 30mm. The result is a roomy and comfortable interior. It includes several additional features like parking assist, cruise control, lane departure warning, OptionaliDrive, BMW Connected drive, collision warning, Smartphone and music player integrated with Facebook and Twitter apps. It is not yet clear however exactly which features will be selected to be included in the Indian version of the BMW 1 Series.
