The Hyundai Veloster is a three door coupe cum hatchback which has already proved to be quite popular in the international market. The South Korean car manufacturer unveiled this model for the Indian buyers at the auto expo of 2012 and the car is expected to appear in the market by late 2014 or early 2015. It has been priced around Rs 10 lacs. With this car, Hyundai aims to move beyond the mass appeal and look for the sporty and sophisticated urban market. The car will compete with models like the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Jetta, Chevrolet Cruz and the Honda Civic.
Engine & Performance
The Veloster in India will be offered with two variants of petrol engine. One is the 1.6l gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine which generates a power of 140 PS at 6300 rpm while the other is the 1.6l multi point fuel injection (MPI) type of engine which generates a power of 138 hp at 6300 rpm. A diesel variant may also be made available to the Indian market. the engine is mated with a six speed manual transmission while there is also an option for the six speed ECOSHIFT dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters.
The Veloster is expected to deliver a mileage of 17 to 18 kmpl on highways. Features like sport tuned suspension, the active ECO system and the hill start assist control are expected to contribute to the fuel efficiency of the car.
This is a four seater two door coupe which has one door on the driver side and two on the passenger side. The front of the car has an aggressive design dominated by the LED headlight accents and large dams. The almost flat bonnet appears to merge with the windscreen. A large common panoramic sunroof for front and rear passengers creates this unique look. The rear hatch windscreen also merges with the sunroof. The side profile is boldly defined by then large wheel arches. The five spoke 18 inch alloy wheels add to the sporty look. The curved rear combination lamps and the chrome twin tail pipe complete the look of the car.
The interior of the car is made comfortable with ergonomically designed seats with pre warming facility. The binocular shaped instrument panel is the most visually appealing feature in the interior of the car. Dual cylindered large dials are mounted here. The three spoke steering wheel with steering mounted control completes the sporty look. The seven inch digital display touch screen with the Hyundai Blue Link and Navigation are other important features of the interior of the car. The narrow A pillar allows for greater visibility.
Features & Specifications
The Hyundai Veloster is packed with a number of features. The GPS navigation and satellite radio with voice recognition, steering mounted audio and cruise control, air conditioner with automatic climate control are some of the most appealing features of this car. Several safety features have also been incorporated like Vehicle Stability Management System, Anti lock braking with Electronic brake force distribution, multiple airbags, head restraints and brake assist system. The BlueLink system provides automatic crash notification, SOS Emergency assistance etc.
Comparison to other cars in the same segment
This sporty looking coupe is expected to fare well in the Indian market. The price is highly competitive and will appeal to those buyers looking for the luxury coupe. Entry for the rear passenger is a little difficult as the first person must move over to allow the next one to enter. However, the sporty look and performance are expected to overcome this drawback.
The Veloster has been introduced in South Korea and the USA in 2011 and remains a popular coupe. It is expected that the car will continue its success story because of its innovative design and highly rated performance in the Indian market.
