Maruti Suzuki Gypsy • Price, Variants & Specifications

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is the king of off road vehicles in India. The original model was launched long ago. Even the 2014 version has not been upgraded much because though the vehicle has few comforts, there is very little competition as far as its off road prowess is concerned. It is a true SUV and competes with such vehicles as Mahindra Thar and some models of the Scorpio. It is priced around Rs 6.9 lakhs.

Engine & Performance

This is one of the leading petrol powered SUVs in the country. It is equipped with a 1298cc 4 cylinder 16 valve gasoline engine which generates a maximum power of 80 bhp at 6000 rpm and delivers a peak torque of 103 Nm at 4500 rpm. This engine is mated with a five speed manual transmission. The powerful car is specially equipped to take on difficult road conditions including hills, snow, desert and fording a stream. Steering damper prevents the transfer of the shock of off road driving to the steering while the hydraulic clutch in cooling fan helps to improve the performance of the car. Disc brakes are provided in the front and drum at the back. Leaf spring suspension with double action damper with booster deliver a steady ride even under difficult road conditions.

This petrol SUV claims a mileage of 11.1 kmpl.

The external design of the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy personifies the power and the off road capacity of the car. It has a very dominating appearance. The fabric upholstery on the hard top is one of its distinguishing features. it is a fiber reinforced removable top. The front windscreen is foldable while the rear of the car is distinguished by the spare wheels covered and mounted on the door. The horizontal bar across the front grille emphasizes on the power of the vehicle and this impression is intensified by the strong lines of the side profile and the oversized tires.

Since the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is built for power and not comfort, the interior features are somewhat bare. Still, several features have been installed to make the off road driving experience safe. There are storage places like the lockable glove compartment. Vanity mirror has been installed on the left sun visor while the front seats can be reclined and slid for better seating. Floor carpet and front package tray are other features.

Features & Specifications

Several safety features have been installed like steering lock, hazard warning light, adjustable head restraints etc. Windshield washer and three speed wiper allow you to drive even under unfavorable weather conditions. Multi function levers have been installed for the ease of driving. Distributor less ignition adds to the safety features of the car. However, more advanced comfort features like air conditioning or on board entertainment are not available in this model.

Comparison to other cars in the same segment

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is a classic off road SUV. It has stuck to the original SUV design making it one of the most popular off road cars in India. It is hugely in demand by military and police forces but is also the first choice of the true off road enthusiast. While cars like Mahindra Thar and Scorpio are giving it stiff competition by introducing a number of comfort and luxury features, this vehicle still rules because of its sheer power and competitive prices.

The earliest model of this car was launched in 1985 and since then, the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has been going strong with only a few modifications. It still remains a leader in its segment and is expected to give all its competitors a run for their money.
