Japanese auto giant Nissan launched a new facelift of 2014 'entry-level saloon' - Sunny in India on January 17, 2017. Mechanically, not many changes are made to the saloon except some stylistic updates. The front of the vehicle is given a major
makeover while the rear part still remains unchanged. Nissan Motor India Private Limited has tagged the sedan at a competitive price starting from Rs.7.91 lakh(ex-showroom).
The inside of Nissan Sunny feels a lot more premium than the outgoing one. The centre console is given an all piano-black finish with silver lining on the sides. The material used for seats are of premium quality with a good cushion available for head and shoulder which increases the comfortability of the passenger.
A/C vents are placed well in the centre and does its job of keeping the cabin cool and an automatic climate control a/c feature also available in the top-end variants. There are steering mounted audio controls on the 3-spoke leather strapped steering wheel with Bluetooth Handsfree calling and audio streaming feature available in the high-end variants. An intelligent key(i-Key) with a push button(only for select variants) is also made available. The sedan comes with two bottle holders in the front doors and can hold two to three small bottles easily.
Rear passengers get an adjustable headrest and a center armrest with cup-holders. A very precise circular a/c vents is also placed for the rear passengers. Other features include a 2 DIN wide display audio system with CD player and AM/FM radio.
The aerodynamic design of new Sunny gives it a whole new character. There is an entire new chrome radiator grille that gives a wide appearance to the front profile of the Sunny sedan. The redesigned Boomerang follow-me-home headlamps provide a modern stylish appeal. There is a lot more chrome surrounding the new pair of fog lamps in the front.
The sedan also comes with an R15 - 12-spoke alloy wheels and the sideways has an aerodynamically integrated turn indicators. Going to the back profile of the sedan, a newly shaped bumper and chrome garnish trunk catches the attention of the viewers. The vehicle comes with a 490 litre of boot space which can easily store a large luggage for your travel.
Engine & Transmission
Not many modifications are made under the hood, retaining the same tested engine of the phased out model in petrol and diesel variants. The petrol engine is powered by a 1.5-litre motor which can produce a maximum power of 98 bhp at 6000rpm in the manual variant while the automatic exceeds the manual version by 2 bhp and produces 100 bhp at 5600 rpm. The powerful 1498 cc, 16 valve, 4 cylinder engine, combined with five-speed manual transmission is nicknamed as 'HR 15'.
The diesel version of Sunny comes with 1.5 litre Pure Drive K9K DCI engine which produces a top power of 84 bhp at 3750 rpm with a peak torque of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. The 1461 cc motor also comes with 5-speed manual transmission engine.
Safety and Braking
A lot of care is taken by Nissan to provide maximum safety to the driver and the co-passengers. The trio of Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) provides the primary braking system in all variants of the sedan. Airbag for the driver is a standard feature across all the variants of the sedan with the top variant getting an additional passenger airbag. Basically, Sunny sedan has included disc as front brakes and drum brake is incorporated into the rear end.
Several other alert features are included in the Sunny sedan to ensure a safe journey for the passengers. The list includes door ajar warning, speed sensing auto-door lock, headlight warning lamp, immobilizer etc.Other features like the Anti-theft Device with Alarm and Seat Belt Warning Lamps comes as standard in the mid-level and top-end variants.
Comparatively, Nissan offers a good mileage in both petrol and diesel variants with respect to other competitors in this segment. The petrol version is expected to deliver a fuel economy of 16.95 kmpl and the automatic version offers a mileage of 17.97 kmpl. The diesel variant delivers an acceptable fuel efficiency of 22.71 kmpl, which is on an average a good figure keeping in view of the performance of the sedan.
Nissan Sunny is exceptional and can be said to be a complete sedan in all aspects. The handling in the diesel version will be a bit on the rougher side but the petrol version comes off as a smooth performer.
Sunny will be pitted against the likes of Verna, City and Vento and the sedan can be a dominating force in this segment with the only concern being the dealership support and the after-sales service.
